i've been contemplating restarting this LJ -thangly again for a while. i just didn't really know how to start. there was that giant, personally devastating, life upheaval breakup thing. i just... stopped communicating with a lot of very cool people. so, hi? this is me dipping my toes in the water and seeing whats up in LJ-land. |

Happy New Year, Internets.
so far i've kept my only 'resolution': to be nicer to my coworkers. i'm trying, i really am. some of them are just SO annoying. Its easier knowing that two of the post-docs are on their way out the door. We have two cool rotation students right now and it would be really nice to get some new people in our lab that i can stomach being around.

i've been meaning to make a substantive post here for a while... so here goes nuttin'.
We saw Cake at the Orpheum on friday night. It was a great show, even though they didn't play my song . I was really really really hoping they would. It was amusing to be at a reunion tour and loving every moment of it. I knew every song (nearly every word). It brought back fond memories of times with pentasonic and syamatara (didn't we have Fashion Nugget on maximum rotation in our dorm room?). I wish you could've been there with us! |

Alternatively, you can get your holiday shoppin' on at Craftland:

in other news.... my superhero weakness is champagne. i'm not sure yet what my superpower is... |

| | bored | ] | I just finished watching "Stranger than Fiction." It is really awesome. Now i have to wonder what type of book i'm living.
Yesterday i watched Stomp the Yard (boo), Music and Lyrics (cute), and Casino Royale (dark and twisted). Monday i watched 40 Year Old Virgin and the first season of West Wing. Why? because i'm stuck in bed for at least one week, possibly more. why? because i severely threw out my back again. I can barely hobble to the bathroom and back. I can crawl down the stairs a few times a day. not that i matters because we can't use our kitchen. Contractors are currently ripping our kitchen apart and putting in new cabinets. Contractors who think its OK to let themselves in at ungodly hours and turn off our water before we've showered for the day. Contractors who also #(%*&% leave at the end of day without locking the doors behind them.
a friend says i have terrible timing. when is it convenient to drop everything you're doing and lie in bed for two weeks? At least it didn't happen during the semester. or before quals. The particular bad timing i'm facing this week: D's mom is in town for a few days visiting, but i can't leave the house. I missed "Annual Lab Cleanup Day" (this is a very serious offense for which i might get yelled at later). I am not preparing stock for Somerville ArtBeat, my biggest (and only) craft show of this summer. (Incidentally, if there are knitting folks who want to schill yarn on my behalf, let me know. i'll pay for your time in yarn.)
AND, to top it off, will probably have to cancel our trip to the west coast to go to a friend's wedding. If this sounds vaguely familiar to you... that's because it is. I threw my back out 2 years ago, at exactly the same week! We had to cancel our trip to the west coast because of it. It would be funny, if i weren't in pain. i think. |

| | refreshed | ] | Thanks so much to everyone who offered ideas, advice, or even cat sitting! A friend who lives right in our neighborhood is going to take them to her apartment while we are gone. there is a dog, but the cats have met her many times. hopefully they will get along and play nice.
i am much relieved. Thanks!

there are very few things in this world i hate more than swimsuit shopping (like many other women!!). I can afford TJ Maxx, but everything they had was either "hoochie" or "grandma". I was disappointed to find myself actually trying on plain black one-pieces with skirts. I don't usually freak out about my age, i actually don't mind that i'll be 30 this year. But for some reason i just can't bring myself to wear those swimsuits that 'older women' wear. I really want one that has some color and style, but isn't obscene. i don't think that's asking for too much?! (c'mon designers. have some common sense. when you size up the pattern, you need to CHANGE the cut. women with large breasts can't wear the ones that plunge down to the navel. seriously!) After two visits, i managed to find one that was moderately flattering, not skanky, but not terribly grandma-ey. yay. now i'm ready for the beach! |

| | worried | ] | help me, o' wise friends on the intarwebs. we have a problem.
Our landlord is going to completely renovate our bathroom - yay! D and I are going on vacation for 5 days - yay! The landlord is going to bring in the contractor to do the work while we are gone - yay! except... The cats will be home. Normally i just have a friend come over and feed them once a day. But i don't trust some contractor (i've only met once) not to let them run away while they are bringing stuff in and out of the house. If i say its ok to lock the cats in a bedroom while they are in the house, then i will worry the entire time that they will forget to open the door and the cats would be trapped without food & water.
What can i do to keep the kits safe and also not worry about them the whole time?
a) pay to board them at the vet? they will hate it, but they will be safe.
b) find a friend who they can live with for a few days? they are kind of neurotic and i'm not sure they would get along with other animals, which most people already have.
c) just leave them at home with explicit written instructions for the contractors?
d) something else i'm not thinking of?
eep! |

the first episode of Uncommon Threads that we filmed back in august is going to air on monday, jan 29th. 11:30 am on HGTV.
the powers that be decided to start showing the new season on a different channel and not tell us. hence the channel change and short notice. the upside is that i can record it myself and not mooch from those that get the DIY Network.
it might be super duper cheesy! you are warned. |

| | grateful | ] | Hello 2007. I don't believe in making resolutions, but i do believe that a new calendar year is a great place to start fresh and set new goals. This way i don't feel guilty for breaking any vows when the goals are not met. They rarely change from year to year anyway. Standards like "be more organized", "exercise more", "be fiscally responsible", etc. Unique to the upcoming year is "pass qualifier, don't get kicked out of grad school".
New Year's Eve was awesome. I was lucky enough to be surrounded by some of the best people in my life. Good food, good drink, great company... this makes me very happy. Look, i even made my own dress!

The froo-froo drink of the evening was a Pomegranate Cocktail. if you want to make it, start with a champagne flute. add: a bit of pomegranate juice (maybe 1 oz.) a smaller bit of simple syrup a teeny splash of rosewater a squeeze of fresh lime juice fill to top with champagne garnish with frozen pomegranate seeds.
yum! (photo) |

| | annoyed | ] | would anybody like 3 or 4 years worth of Martha Stewart Living magazines? They are in the 1999-2002 range, i think. I don't care if you want to cut them up and use for an art project or something. You just have to come to waltham to pick them up.
I feel the need to purge some of the excess "stuff" in my life. i have no idea why i've been saving these for this long. |

[Dec. 17th, 2006|03:43 pm] |
ouch. i feel like i drank a bottle of gin last night. In reality, i went to bed before 9 pm, no alcohol consumed.
Before that, i was on my feet for 8+ hours, talking nonstop the whole time. I love talking about yarn and crafting all day, but damn it takes a lot of energy! After the show i was bone tired, but my mind was still racing. When i get overstimulated and exhausted i get dumb and do things like give people the wrong change. I am extremely grateful to my Booth Babes: Darius, GeekPixie, and Miss G. Can't imagine how i would've made it without them.
here's a pic of the "metric truck-ton" of yarn we had yesterday!
now i must return to cleaning my crap(ft) room, because i promised D that the Yarn Factory that took over the living room for the past few weeks would disappear. pronto. |

| weekend happenings |
[Dec. 11th, 2006|02:41 pm] |
I went to NYC this weekend to celebrate the 30th birthday of my friend Ms B. It was mucho fun.

Friday night we had dinner with SkullLady and SkullHubby, saw their adorable apt (dammit, i forgot to take pictures!). Spent the nights in the apt of college friends L & C in hoboken. They are lovely hostesses and it was like staying at our own private Bed & Breakfast. We did fun, wintery, touristiki stuff like watching people ice skate in Bryant Park. (i really wanted to skate, but the line was too long.) Went to the market at Union Square, i replaced my favorite NY tourist t-shirt that i've worn thin in the years since i first bought it. Watched the light show at Grand Central. Walked up 5th ave to oogle the window displays. I can't afford that stuff, so mostly I just oogle the architecture. [The Scribner's building, currently a mega-Sephora, is breathtakingly gorgeous.] We walked through Tiffany's for shits & giggles. Ms B decided we should ask to try on something disgustingly extravagant... i didn't think she would really do it! for about 30 seconds i had $96,000 worth of diamonds resting on my wrist! "wow, its really heavy" i said. "well it IS 21 carats" snorted the store associate. oh, right, like i have ANY point of reference for that comparison. ha! We had dinner at a really delicious Belgian restaurant.
much fun. can't wait to go back and see more. |

| bad science, bad behavior |
[Nov. 28th, 2006|06:02 pm] |
such a bad day in the lab today that i flew off the handle and threw something. not at anyone in particular, but there were people around and i shouldn't have done that.
confluence of bad circumstances. figured out an idiotic mistake on my part, causing my experiments not to work for the last two weeks. figured out that the lab freezer is 10 degrees warmer than it should be, putting lots of other experiments in jeopardy. Then Dr. Idiot (post doc) used up something in a very expensive kit without telling me. I was all set to start my experiment from the beginning, now that i know whats wrong with it. He has taken ONE COMPONENT out of a proprietary kit, meaning that i can't replace that without buying the whole damn thing again. i snapped at him something aweful, he was shaking with apology.
it was a dumb thing for him to do, but it really isn't the end of the world. i was stressed and over reacted. bad. bad. bad. |
